Shower repairs Boondall bathrooms need usually trace back to one tired fitting, not a pipe gone wrong. The three calls we take most: a head that keeps dripping, water stuck short of hot, and a spray that has lost its force.

Reading the Signs of a Failing Mixer

Three faults account for most shower callouts: a drip that carries on once the water is shut off, water that will not run hot, and flow gone weak or uneven. Each symptom names its own culprit.

  1. The drip after shutdown

Water seeping from the head when everything is off comes from the mixer, where a tired washer or cartridge lets water past the seal, not from the head itself. A short drain-off once you finish is normal, and our dripping shower head guide sorts the two apart.

  2. Temperature stuck short of hot

The cartridge inside the mixer governs flow and the mix of hot against cold, so wear in that part shows up as a stiff handle or water that never warms past lukewarm. If the kitchen and the laundry have lost their hot water too, look to the water heater instead.

  3. Weak or lopsided spray

Scale packed into the spray holes, a restrictor built into the head, or a tired cartridge can all flatten the flow. When pressure is low at every outlet in the house, that is a supply fault we chase separately.

On a shower over a bath, the diverter gives one more clue: the spout pouring while the head is running means that part has worn.

From the Shower Head Back to the Wall

Five parts make up a shower between the outlet and the wall: the head, the arm or rail, the hose on a handheld set, the mixer, and the diverter on bath combinations. Naming the part that owns the symptom is half the diagnosis.

  1. The head

sprays the water, and it is the one piece any householder may swap.

  2. The arm

carries water out of the wall to a fixed head; seepage at that connection while you shower means the joint is loose or its seal is worn.

  3. The rail and hose

hold the handset, fed from the wall outlet.

  4. The mixer and cartridge

sit in or on the wall, and any replacement cartridge is matched to the model already there.

  5. The diverter

sends water to either the spout or the head.

Arms and rails sit exposed, so reaching them means no wall work. A mixer buried in the wall is a different story, because getting at its cartridge means going through the tile, and that is where a licensed plumber earns the fee.

Where a Shower Head Swap Ends and Plumbing Begins

Yes, you can change your own shower head in Queensland, since the QBCC counts that single swap as unregulated work. The product going on still needs to meet the standards.

Everything behind the head belongs to a licence. The arm, the wall mixer and its cartridge all sit on the licensed side, because Queensland classes repairing, replacing or removing a fitting as minor work. A licensee does it, and neither a council permit nor a Form 4 applies.

Putting in an extra outlet, or shifting the one you have, lifts the job into notifiable work. A licensed plumber still does it, the permit requirement still does not apply, but a Form 4 reaches the QBCC within 10 business days of completion. We handle the lodgement and the fee, which may be passed through to you.

Repair or Replace Your Shower Fittings

The dividing test is condition and scope: replace a part once a washer or cartridge cannot revive it, or once the job adds or moves an outlet. Anything short of that is repair work, and how the fitting has worn decides which side it falls.

  1. Certification comes first

A licensed plumber may only install a shower fitting that carries WaterMark certification. Heads, taps and flow controllers also need registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme (WELS) before they can legally go in.

  2. New dwellings have a minimum

Queensland's sustainable housing rules require at least 3 stars under WELS on showerheads in a new home; renovations are exempt.

  3. Rentals have a flow limit

In a Queensland rental, the showerhead has to run at 9 litres per minute or less before a landlord can pass the full water bill to the tenant. On fixtures made from 2005 onwards, the Residential Tenancies Authority says to look for at least 3 stars.

  4. Bigger changes change the paperwork

A second outlet makes the job notifiable, and a full rework of the room belongs on our bathroom renovation plumbing page.

What the Suburb's Housing Mix Means for a Repair

Between 2020 and 2025 the suburb's population grew an estimated 7.4 per cent at the area level, with 260 dwellings approved across those five years. New bathrooms from that wave now sit beside postwar fibro and weatherboard houses, sometimes on the same stretch off Sandgate Road.

A mixer installed in the 1950s or 1960s often needs its cartridge matched by measurement, because the model is long off the shelf. Fittings from the recent approvals usually take a standard part. Damp, salty air on the tidal-flat side of the suburb works over exposed chrome arms and rails faster than the dry western streets do, so we check those while we are there.

How We Run a Shower Repair

  1. 1

    Describe the problem

Shower Repair FAQs

Call (07) 3523 6484

Can a plumber fix my shower in Boondall?

Yes, we fix every fitting from the spray end back: the head, arm, rail, mixer, cartridge and diverter. Water escaping the shower recess through tiles or the floor is a separate problem from worn fittings, and our leaking shower repairs page takes it.

Can I change my own shower head in Queensland?

Yes, the QBCC lists that one swap as unregulated work, so any householder may fit a new head. The product going on still needs to meet the standards.

Why does my shower run cold?

Usually a tired mixer cartridge, which sets the blend of hot against cold and lets too much of the cold through once it wears. When hot taps right across the house run cold as well, the water heater is the part to book.

Do I need a plumber to install a new shower?

Yes, because adding or shifting a shower outlet is notifiable work reserved for a licensed plumber. No council permit applies; instead we lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC inside 10 business days of finishing, and the lodgement fee may come back to you.

Who fixes a shower mixer in a Boondall unit?

You do, as lot owner, when the pipes serve your lot alone and stay inside its boundary. A shower tray is the lot owner's or occupier's to maintain even where it sits outside the lot, so a mixer repair inside the unit is yours to book.
